What is The Felix Foundation?

The Felix Foundation is a home based wildlife rehab facility and small domestic fox sanctuary. We specialize in the rehab and release of wild canids and other predators.

We also provide sanctuary to domestic rescued foxes, such as those rescued from the fur industry or some pet surrenders that need a stable and loving home.

Our founder, Jolene, has always been an animal helper, healer, and advocate. Wherever her heart takes her, she goes. Right now, Felix is showing her heart the way.

We hope that you, our supportive community, will help us save and help these wonderful animals.

WILDLIFE BABY SEASON

Currently, it is wildlife baby season in Michigan. If you need help with an animal in distress please follow these steps:

1. CALL US before moving wildlife unless it is clearly in distress or bleeding. Babies left alone are usually not abandoned.

2. If you‘ve already moved said wildlife, please keep it contained and keep it in a quiet and dark area away from humans and pets. Please provide external heat for infant animals as they can not thermoregulate.

3. Please do not feed or offer any food via mouth. Animals, whether babies or adults need to be properly assessed before eating or drinking.

4. If you see anything on any animal that looks like tiny flecks of “white rice“ please get it to a rehabber IMMEDIATELY and do not try to wash it off. These are fly eggs and will quickly hatch and become maggots.

REUNITING BABIES

As mentioned previously, most baby animals found alone are not abandoned or orphaned. Wildlife rehabbers can usually tell via a picture and a few quick questions if the animal in question is in fact orphaned. We urge you to please take note of where you found it. Wild animals are devoted mothers and will grieve their young. We have wonderful methods to reunite animals with their mothers and this usually does not take long!

If you have trapped and removed a mother and found babies after, its OK, we will not judge you. Please just call us and be honest. We always will try to reunite mother with babies but if you are not willing to- again- please be honest so no one is wasting their time. I would much prefer to know this upfront, than to waste time trying to convince you.

Rehabilitation and Education for coexistence

We have always been better known as Mother of Many, however, once we started focusing on sanctuary work we re-branded as The Felix Foundation as a clean slate. We have a soft spot for wild canids, however, we pride ourselves in our willingness to help all animals if we are able to. If we have space, we will help! We also are more than willing to assist with cage/coop inspections to ensure they are safe, education materials for wildlife or any other way we can possibly help the public co-exist with our native wildlife. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need help with any animals in need.

We understand that not everyone feels the same way about foxes or mink or any other wildlife species how we do. That's OK. We ask that instead of trapping and relocating, that you reach out to us and let us know so we can help teach you ways to co exist or ask your *nuisance* animals nicely to leave. Please understand, wildlife isn't trying to hurt you or your pets. They are merely surviving in a world that is disappearing. We do hold the proper permits to help with wildlife removal.

foxes as pets

If you're reading this, you're probably looking for information on keeping foxes as pets. First, let me clarify, the ONLY time wild born foxes should be kept in captivity is when there is something that prevents them from being released. Such as an injury that renders them unable to fend for themselves and carry out daily functions as a wild fox.

Keeping captive born foxes as pets can be rewarding, if you go into it with the right expectations, permits and knowledge. Foxes are not indoor pets. They are destructive, have a musky odor, and they communicate with their mouths. Now, I'm sure you've seen a tik tok, or videos on Facebook or IG showing the sweet adorable friendly fox, well behaved and cuddling in bed with its owner. I'm here to tell you, that's not typical for foxes as pets.

Still not dissuaded? That's ok. I wasn't either. Read on.......

The very first step to keeping foxes as pets, is

to make sure you are in compliance with your

state regulations. Some states will require minimum caging requirements, or certain experience to get your permits. Do it. Don't try to fly under the radar because if you're caught, there is always the chance that your fox will not only be confiscated, but euthanized also. If you are located in Michigan, we are happy to educate you on fox ownership, and license requirements, and building proper enclosures. We do charge a fee for this consultation service, which covers diet and cost, caging, enrichment and information on how to obtain the proper permits. As a wildlife rehabilitator, Jolene is skilled at designing secure enclosures, animal nutrition and other aspects of fox ownership.

WANT TO SUPPORT OUR CAUSE?

There are lots of ways to help us make ends meet and save more animals. As a 501c3, we are not federally or state funded and we are not paid for our time or efforts. Sending donations, whether monetary or goods is very appreciated and goes directly to the animals. We accept several forms of payment and have amazon wishlists if you wish to send us something.

Animal Sponsorship

Each of our sanctuary animals is supported via sponsorship by our supporters. Sponsoring is a wonderful way to show support with a monthly or annual donation that supports the animals that call The Felix Foundation their home. The donations from sponsorships stay in their own account and are used specifically for vet visits, vaccines, food, enclosure expansion and other expenses that may occur.

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: What do I do if I find an injured or orphaned animal?

A: Please contain the animal, keep in a warm, dark and quiet area and call a rehabber ASAP!!

Q: There is a fox that is missing fur in my neighborhood.

A: This fox likely has mange. Please contact us or another rehabber so we can assist him right away! Foxes with mange are immunocompromised and can not hunt easily.

Q: I got a pet fox and its not what I expected. Now what do I do?

A: Please call us to explore options and see what we can do. We have owner surrender programs, but we can also help get you set up for a successful, happy ownership! Whatever you do, please do not give your fox away to a friend or anyone who does not have experience. 517-375-2763

Q: I have further questions about fox ownership

A: We are happy to help! Call us, send an email or text and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

Q: What should I feed my neighborhood Fox, raccoon, squirrels, opossum etc?

A: Nothing!! Feeding wildlife creates habituation, and although it seems like a wonderful idea and is a truly special sentiment, it can be dangerous for the animal, and cause upsets to their GI Tract.

Q: I want to be a wildlife rehabber

A: That is GREAT! Every state has their own requirements.

But, the very first one for any location is to

find a rehabber and volunteer your time to learn the ropes and whether or not its truly for you. Wildlife rehab is wonderful work, but its not for everyone.
